The M438dn sits in the middle of HP's M438 range, and the distinction from its siblings is about fitment rather than engine.

Against the M438n, the M438dn adds automatic two-sided printing. That alone usually pays for the price gap in paper within a year in an office printing a few thousand pages a month, and it is the reason to step up.

Against the M438nda, two things are missing. The reversing document feeder is not fitted here, and while it can be added, HP requires a separate purchase and installation by authorised service rather than a simple bolt-on. Automatic two-sided copying is also not available on the M438dn at all, only on the M438nda. So the M438dn prints duplex but copies from the glass, one side at a time.

If your office prints long documents and copies rarely, that trade makes sense and this is the right model. If originals arrive in stacks, or if you copy double-sided documents regularly, buy the M438nda outright rather than retrofitting later at extra cost.

A note on consumables: this series ships with an introductory toner cartridge rated at roughly 4,000 pages rather than a full one, alongside an imaging drum rated at roughly 80,000 pages. Budget for a replacement cartridge earlier than you would on a machine supplied with standard toner, and ask us to quote one alongside the machine.

The M438dn fits small offices of roughly five to fifteen people that print steadily, need A3 available and care about paper cost: accountancy practices, small legal offices, coaching classes, housing societies, and design and engineering site offices printing drawings.

Automatic duplexing is the whole argument for choosing it over the M438n, and it is a strong one. But be honest about copying volume before deciding. A duplex printer that still copies from the glass one page at a time is a half-solved problem in an office that handles multi-page originals daily, and the M438nda solves the other half.
